The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Follow the yellow brick road again! Young Dorothy lives on a farm in Kansas where a large tornado picks her house, and her dog up and deposits them in the land of Oz. Things in Oz are strange and beautiful, but Dorothy just wants to get back home. She's helped by the Good Fairy of the North, but she's also in trouble with the Wicked Witch of the West, who seeks revenge for the death of the Wicked Witch of the East, for which she blames Dorothy. While searching her way home she meets a Scarecrow who needs a brain, a Tin Man who needs a heart, and a cowardly lion who needs courage.

Alice in Wonderland (1951)

Based on the 1865 book by Lewis Carroll, this is the classic Disney animated version of Alice's adventures as she follows a white rabbit into a "Wonderland" of her own imagination. On her journey, she encounters the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, and a host of other beloved characters brought to life with the usual Disney zest. Combining stellar animation with upbeat songs such as "I'm Late," ALICE IN WONDERLAND garnered an Academy Award nomination for "Best Scoring of a Musical Picture."

Gone With the Wind (1939)

Hot-tempered, self-centered, part-Irish Southern beauty Scarlett O’Hara, played to the teeth by Vivien Leigh, loves the gentlemanly Ashley Wilkes. Smug, rebellious, honest blockade-running profiteer Rhett Butler, portrayed gracefully and naturally by Clark Gable, loves Scarlett. Ashley, who is also in love with Scarlett, marries his genteel cousin Melanie because he believes that their quiet similarities will create a better marriage than Scarlett’s passion. Meanwhile, sparks fly between Rhett and Scarlett at their first encounter and continue throughout Scarlett’s first two marriages. Scarlett and Rhett finally wed, but Scarlett continues to pine for her beloved Ashley. Set against the Civil War and Southern Reconstruction, this tragic love quadrangle offers the burning of Atlanta and fields of wounded Confederates as part of its lush scenery. Meticulous backdrops, glorious sunsets, numerous silhouettes, and the ultrasaturated Technicolor film create a hyperreal vision. The romantic score is every bit as lush and dramatic as the photography, borrowing folk melodies from the Old South to make the tragic war concrete. Heavy nostalgic tones pervade the often witty dialogue and larger-than-life charms and faults of the leads. GONE WITH THE WIND stands among the greatest epic dramas ever filmed.

Toy Story 2 (1999)

"Toy Story 2" is the exciting, all-new sequel to the landmark 1995 computer-animated blockbuster from Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios. This time around, the fun and adventure continue when Andy goes off to summer camp and the toys are left to their own devices. Things shift into high gear when an obsessive toy collector kidnaps Woody -- who hasn't the slightest clue that he is a greatly valued collectible. It's now up to Buzz Lightyear and the gang from Andy's room -- Mr. Potato Head, Slinky Dog, Rex, and Hamm -- to spring into action and save their pal from winding up a museum piece. There are plenty of thrills as the toys get into one predicament after another in their daring race to get home before Andy does.

Toy Story (1995)

Woody, a traditional pull-string talking cowboy, has long enjoyed a place of honor as the favorite among six-year-old Andy's menagerie of toys. Quick to calm their anxieties about being replaced by newer arrivals, Woody finds his own confidence shaken, and his status as top toy in jeopardy, upon the arrival of Buzz Lightyear, simply the coolest space action figure ever made. Woody plots to get rid of Buzz, but things backfire and he finds himself lost in the outside world with Buzz as his only companion. Joining forces to find their way home, the two rivals set out on an adventure that lands them in the clutches of Sid, a sadistic neighborhood kid who is notorious for dismembering and reassembling mutant toys in his bedroom. As guests of Sid and his dog, Scud, the two fugitive toys forge a genuine friendship and learn that only through mutual trust and respect do they have any chance of survival.

Quadroon (1972)

This sex-ploitation flick is set in seamy New Orleans in early 1835. It follows the attempts of a white Yankee boy to teach literacy to a group of mulatto prostitutes. Before long he falls in love with one of them and gets in plenty of trouble.

Wall Street (1987)

Oliver Stone opened fire on the greed decade of the 1980s with this morality tale set on Wall Street. It stars Charlie Sheen as Bud Fox, an ambitious rookie stockbroker from a blue-collar background who is mesmerized by Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas), a Mephistophelean superbroker who specializes in corporate takeovers. Despite his initial resistance to Bud's entreaties, Gekko finally takes on the eager beaver as his protégé, schooling him in the kind of slash-and-burn maneuvers that have taken Gekko to the top. This style is far more attractive to Fox than the more prosaic but principled approach to investing preached by veteran Lou Mannheim (Hal Holbrook). And, at first, it's impossible to dispute his preference; as Bud's life moves into the fast lane, he quickly acquires an upscale apartment and a girlfriend to match, interior designer Darien (Darryl Hannah). But when Gekko demands that Bud not only break the law but directly undermine his union-leader father, Carl (Martin Sheen), and jeopardize the jobs and lives of his friends and family, he realizes that the cost of success might be more than he's willing to pay. WALL STREET is a riveting, testosterone-fueled tour of the Street's upper echelons, featuring standout performances by Michael Douglas and Martin Sheen.

The Lord of the Rings (1978)

Ralph Bakshi's animated adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's revered Middle-earth saga captures the dark mood of the books extraordinarily well. The film covers the first half of the trilogy--THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING and the earlier part of THE TWO TOWERS--as Frodo (voiced by Christopher Guard), the cousin of Bilbo Baggins from THE HOBBIT, is given the all-powerful ring sought by the evil Sauron of Mordor. So begins his adventure, as he must elude Mordor's black riders in an effort to prevent the ring from returning to its owner and thereby signaling the end of Middle-earth. Even with the mighty wizard Gandalf as his ally and faithful friends Merry, Sam, and Pippin by his side, Frodo is still up to his hobbit neck in peril.

Bakshi took a big risk when deciding to direct the beloved Tolkien tale, but the resulting work effectively brings Middle-earth to the screen. Bakshi combines painted live-action footage with various styles of animation to create a very unusual collage-style texture for this film. Viewers should be warned that the story ends rather abruptly, leaving room for a sequel that was, unfortunately, never filmed. Still, for fans of fantasy, this moody, atmospheric version of the novels captures the shadowy hues of Tolkien's work in a way that is unique and worth discovering.

The Anarchist Cookbook (2003)

This romantic comedy depicts a group of young people living in an anarchist commune in Dallas, Texas, focusing on a college dropout named Puck (Gummersall). The relatively harmless shenanigans of the group are challenged when they are joined by a rather more dangerous nihilist named Johnny Black (Bruno), who challenges them to become more violent in their displays of anarchy...

Ash Wednesday (2002)

Set in the early 1980's, this is the story of a man (Burns) who must save his younger brother (Wood) from Irish and Italian gangsters.

The Great American Snuff Film(2007)

Writer-director Sean Tretta's indie horror flick THE GREAT AMERICAN SNUFF FILM is a grindhouse gorefest trafficking in that most notorious of urban legends, the snuff film. The harrowing mockumentary dramatizes the events leading up to a reel of Super 8 snuff footage found in the home of an arrested serial killer/rapist, depicting the sadistic torture of two kidnapped girls and culminating with their supposedly "real" murders in the film's final minutes.

The Adventures of the Great Mouse Detective (1986)

This exciting, fun-filled Disney classic adventure pits legendary mouse super sleuth, Basil, against Professor Ratigan, the world's greatest criminal mind. With the help of Dawson and a sweet little mouse named Olivia, Basil must outwit the ruthless rodent to save all of Mousedom. Features the voices of Vincent Price, Barrie Ingham, Val Bettin, Susanne Pollatschek, Candy Candido, Eve Brenner, Alan Young and Melissa Manchester.

The African Queen (1952)

The boozing, smoking, cussing captain of a tramp steamer, Charlie Allnut, saves prim and proper Rose Sayer after her brother is killed by German soldiers at the beginning of World War I in Africa. Many quarrels later, the two set sail on the Ulonga-Bora in order to sabotage a German ship. Based on the 1935 novel by C.S. Forester, the wonderful combination of Hepburn and Bogie (who won an Oscar) makes this a thoroughly enjoyable blend of comedy and adventure. Later came the book (and Clint Eastwood film) White Hunter, Black Heart, which chronicled Peter Viertel's experiences observing Huston throughout the making of the picture.

Strictly Ballroom (1993)

A top ballroom dancer pairs with a plain, left-footed local girl when his maverick style earns him the disdain of his more conventionally-minded colleagues. Together, the team gives it their all and makes dreams of the National Championship title come true. Directed in a delicious high-key style by director Luhrmann (WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S ROMEO + JULIET) in his madcap debut.

The Fraternity(2002)

Robin Dunne (THE SKULLS II) stars in this campus thriller as Alex Desineau, a young student at Runice Academy who is about to be inducted into the school's elite fraternity. Although Alex senses something sinister about the fraternity and its head, Spencer Runcie, he joins anyway. However, when a mysterious murder shakes the campus, the seams in Runcie's premier fraternity begin to show, exposing its sinister inner workings and forcing Alex to realize that his new brothers may be responsible for murder.

Love and Honor (2008)

After THE HIDDEN BLADE and THE TWILIGHT SAMURAI, Yoji Yamada concludes his samurai trilogy with LOVE AND HONOR. This Japanese drama stars Takuya Kimura as a newly blind man who must grapple with the weight of the titular virtues in the country's feudal era. Yamada and his co-screenwriters adapt their film from a story from author Shuuhei Fujisawa.

A Wedding for Bella(2001)

Dominic (Scott Baio) feels torn between two worlds. In one world, he plays the ultimate, cutthroat, corporate tool - - complete with a sleek car and all the other trappings of the lifestyle. In the other world, however, he becomes a loving man who takes care of his two brothers, one handicapped and one a flighty actor. He also runs a baking company, and develops a relationship with Bella, an older, mother figure. He and Bella grow close, and she talks at length about her daughter Lucca and her long struggle to save enough money for Lucca to have a proper American wedding (though her daughter has no prospective groom). When Bella reveals that she suffers from a terminal illness, Dominic sees where his priorities lie, and searches for Lucca to try to make Bella's wedding wish come true.

Jules and Jim (1962)

JULES AND JIM is François Truffaut's intense, beautiful, enigmatic film about the lifelong friendship between two writers--French novelist Jim (Henri Serre) and Austrian children's author Jules (Oskar Werner)--and their mutual love for the eccentric Catherine (Jeanne Moreau). With artful black-and-white imagery, the story begins in 1920s Paris when Jules and Jim first meet and become friends. As young single men, they gallavant about Paris, chasing women or studying ancient art, always animated, curious, and charming. When they meet the equally energetic Catherine, whose impulses range from dressing up as a man to taking midnight plunges into the Seine, their circle is complete. But when World War II erupts, with Jules and Jim fighting on opposite sides, everything changes. Jules marries Catherine before going off to battle. After the war, they settle into a quiet existence in the French countryside. But Catherine is restless and unfaithful. Jim reunites with his oldest and closest friends, and Catherine makes room for him in their house, asking him to move in and become her lover. Jim complies, as he wants nothing more than to please his friend Jules, who agrees to the plan. From there, the film's sweeping photography and wonderfully philosophical scripting tightens as the tale becomes even more complicated. Even its darkest moments, JULES AND JIM is movingly alluring as the friendship between the two men paints a meaningful portrait of human understanding and compassion. Like the similarly themed TWO ENGLISH GIRLS, Truffaut's film is based on a novel by Henri-Pierre Roché.

The Black Balloon (2008)

In this Australian film from the producer of STRICTLY BALLROOM, Thomas (Rhys Wakefield, HOME AND AWAY) has a lot to contend with. Not only has the teenager just moved to a new school, but he also has to take care of his older brother Charlie (Luke Ford, THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR), who is autistic. As Thomas struggles in his relationship with Charlie, he also tries to win the heart of his new girlfriend (Gemma Ward, THE STRANGERS). THE BLACK BALLOON also stars Toni Collette (LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE) as Thomas and Charlie's pregnant mother.

Salt of the Earth (1954)

A controversial drama about the struggles of striking mineworkers in a small New Mexico town whose views are socialistic and surprisingly feminist. Many of the actors and the film's director were blacklisted after its release.

Floating Weeds (1959)

In this sly and subtle Japanese morality tale, Yasujiro Ozu observes a stray Kabuki troupe as they follow their leader to a small coastal village. The troupe puts on a shambling performance and questions their vocation. Meanwhile, the troupe leader visits an old mistress and their illegitimate son who believes the man to be his uncle. Allegiances and alliances are thrown into doubt as the troupe leader's past and current lovers clash, as do various generations when the jealous current mistress promotes a romance between a young actress and the leader's young son.

Irene in Time (2009)

Indie director Henry Jaglom (DÉJÀ VU) helms this unconventional drama about the relationships between fathers and daughters. However, IRENE IN TIME goes beyond just the present and examines the effects that this bond will have on the daughters’ romantic futures. HOLLYWOOD DREAMS-star Tanna Frederick reunites with her director, as do members of the crew.

Kirk Whalum - The Gospel According to Jazz: Chapter 2(2002)
